Sarah Otto, Learning Support Teacher
Sarah is an experienced learning support teacher skilled in assessing student needs and adapting curriculum and teaching techniques to suit individual learning styles. Prior teaching positions include Learning Support Teacher at the International School of Zug and Luzern in Switzerland and Inclusion Teacher at Hoover Middle School in San Francisco, CA. Her experience has ranged from working with children in preschool to grade 8 with mild to severe disabilities. Sarah feels passionate about actively encouraging students to become advocates for themselves and their education. She has a BA in Child Development from SJSU and an MA in Moderate/Sever Special Education from SFSU. Sarah is passionate about food, loves to travel and enjoys hiking with her family.
Wende DeFlon, English Language Arts and Phonics Instructor
Wende has a passion for children that has led her to pursue new opportunities as she has transitioned into a new phase of her life. After graduating from Hampshire College with her BA in Cultural Anthropology and from John Hopkins with her MSc in Population Dynamics/Demography, Wende has for many years worked with cultural and educational organizations in Central America. Since she is bilingual in Spanish/English, these jobs helped to fuel her love for this culture and sharpen her language skills. Her most recent job saw her return to the Charlottesville area where she was a literacy tutor for Literacy for All Charlottesville. Wende is excited to help the Kindergarten and 1st Graders develop their English phonics skills!
Kate Wisby, Second Grade English Teacher, Music Instructor
Kate graduated with her BA in Music from Christopher Newport University, and has been teaching music lessons since 2015. She has been a music instructor for our children for the past 2 years. This year Kate will be using her Montessori K-5 training and teaching our Second Grade class in addition to creating virtual music content. She is also currently working torward her Masters Degree in Business. She loves dancing, taking Zumba classes, hiking, and playing with her cat Juliet in her free time.
Arlene Campbell, Roaming Assistant
Born in Pennsylvania, raised in the D.C. suburbs and abroad, Arlene’s family heritage and overseas experiences enriched and shaped her life. As the daughter of a career U.S. Foreign Service Officer, Arlene grew up in Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Chile with travels to Southeast Asia, Western Europe, the Caribbean and the Middle East. Graduating high school in McLean, Virginia, she entered the College of William and Mary and obtained a B.A. in Government and Spanish. After college, Arlene’s desire to use her language skills and to be in international relations led her to join the Central Intelligence Agency. Then she met and married her husband, Patrick, an infantry officer in the U.S. Marines and they moved to Charlottesville. They have traveled across the globe due to Patrick's job. Upon her husband’s retirement, her family returned to Charlottesville and Arlene was able to apply her loves of languages and education to teach children in language immersion. She has now returned to the ISC to assist in our French JK classroom, using her knowledge of French to help the students.
Nattachya Olivares, Roaming Assistant
Natthachya is in her third year at the ISC, and she has been a regular caregiver and nanny to ISC families for over 2 years. She is a native Spanish speaker and came to the US from Venezuela. Nattachya lives here with her husband Jose and a one year old daughter. Natthachya gained her BA in Social Communication and Journalism University Fermin Toro Barquisimeto in 2013 and completed a Masters in Economics and Organizational Communication in 2016. Nattachya loves working with the Toddlers and especially enjoys arts and crafts with them.
Sarah Fadhil, Roaming Assistant
Sarah is in her second year of working in our program. She has two children, Malak (an ISC alum) and Hussain (currently in the French JK program).
Sofhia Pineda, Roaming Assistant
Sofhia is in her second year of working in our program and is excited to use her native language of Spanish with the children.
